Vacation time for my family in the Catskill Mountains of New York has been a yearly tradition since I married into my husband's family. We are blessed to have use of a house in the woods and I have been enjoying the peace and quiet and much cooler temperatures than those I left behind in NC.
There are differences in yard sales in the northern states, not many but still differences. In this area, the sales start around 8am at the earliest. There are often sales on Friday, Saturday and Sunday whereas in my area, 6am is the earliest start time and a Friday sale is out of the ordinary as is a Sunday sale. Since I am on vacation, 8am is rather nice to say the least!
The first Saturday we arrived late in the afternoon so obviously no yard sales for me, but the local Temple always has a sale on the 1st Sunday of July. At least I knew I had that to look forward to. However Sunday morning we were all awakened to thunderous storms, torrential rains and the sale was a washout. My sister-in-law, Paula and I were disappointed to miss a favorite once a year tradition together. What a bummer.
So the following Saturday, my daughter Brenna, niece Erin and her daughter, Sarah, and I left the house to hit a neighborhood sale close by. It started at a reasonable 8am so we were able to sleep in a bit.
It is such a pretty area, the Catskills, and I love driving around the hills and seeing the countryside. The neighborhood was nice and many of the homes did participate. The first one we visited said "Porch Sale" (my first encounter with that sign) and sure enough, everything for sale was in their enclosed porch. I found 2 small red Pyrex bowls, without lids for $2. They are cute and I like the red color.
Porch Sale! (nice signage!)
I like the balloons for an eye catching ad.
We loved the furniture at this sale but seeing how we can't lug furniture back to NC, we reluctantly left a lot behind. This wood planter was selling for $5 and Brenna said she would have loved to have taken that home! Erin did pick up a small wooden outdoor table for $2 she is going to use at her home in Pennsylvania. Lucky Erin lives only 4 hours away and has a van! Also in her favor was the table folded so her husband didn't put up too much of a fuss when it came time to load the car for the return drive home.
Had to pass up the saws at the same sale. Had to take a photo though. I just liked the look of them.
We completed the neighorhood sale and on the way back saw this sign and turned in immediately. Loved the name of the street and of course, "nice sign"! How many Dingle Daisy Roads have you been down?!!
See! Dingle Daisy Road!
Now this sale was waaaay off the beaten track! I wish I had taken photos of the place because it was really interesting. The fellow I talked to was an older gentleman who had tons of old stuff in his barn/storage area. An old style pram, a wonderful old dollhouse, old cars, and I mean REALLY OLD cars, stuff that the guys on American Pickers would have been all over! We left with nothing but regret that we didn't have the space or the need for his old stuff.
Trunk full of stuff!!
Brenna bought this mirror for $3 (the sign said $5) and plans on painting it. Great potential! Oops, that's me taking a picture of it and trying NOT to be seen~ oh well, I tried!
Erin bought the big colander for $1. I bought the shoes for $2, candle and candle holder $1, padded hangers (4 for $1), lime green hat for my brother, $1, and Sarah found the children's books for $2. The red box contains a Christmas decoration Brenna bought for $2 which goes with one at home. Not shown is a LL Bean deep purple long sleeved t-shirt I bought for $1 which appears to have never been worn. Fits great!
I have wanted to get a flower "frog" for my flower arrangements (I am not talented in flower arranging) so I snatched this one for fifty cents!
Brenna picked up this candle and candle holder for $2 (marked for $3). Shoes in background not part of purchasing adventure.
I also bought a pair of venitian glass earrings for $3. They were really pretty and I love the color which is a brilliant lime green with a deep purple backing. Love my little Pyrex bowls
Erin's find: Queen size quilt with shams for $7. Perfect for the upstairs bedroom.
Close up of sham
Sarah found this doll size table that is just the cutest thing ever for $1!!!
It even tilts on its side!
This is the cute outdoor table Erin picked up for $1. She is quite pleased! Am wondering if she will paint and if so what color.
So there were lots of goodies, the prices were great and the day was beautiful. To top it off, I was able to spend a fun time with my female relatives in a pretty area. A win win in my book. I will not be able to go to yard sales for the next 3 weeks so I will be MIA for a while. Happy shopping to those who can and see you in a few weeks.
