Happy Hunting

Happy hunting indeed. Folks, I may have been absent from blogging but not from treasure hunting. April was a full month; spending time with family as we said our goodbyes to my brother, Sonny and finding therapy in my Saturday morning shopping with friends. Thank you to Carolyn, Patty and Johanna for joining me in the early morning hours. We laughed, shared our lives and found some good finds. That's therapy in my book!

I'm going to show you a few of our combined treasures starting with my Saturday with Carolyn. Armed   with her flashlight, my headlamp, and caps (hides bad morning hairdo) we realized early on it was a "table day". It's funny how some days at the yard sales you find the same type of item at several sales. Carolyn bought 2 tables that day.

The one pictured below came with a nice market umbrella which I didn't get in the picture. At another she found a smaller table with 2 matching chairs for $10. Yes, all need a paint job but just can't beat that price. Fortunately Carolyn's husband has a truck so after we finished our shopping, we went back around to collect the tables. Thanks Quin, your truck made the purchases possible.  It was a bulky day!

Table with umbrella: $25. Decorative buoys: $5

.

And here is the other table she found. Note the purple color on the three metal tables. That color didn't last long after our purchase!

Did I mention a table theme day? Well, here are the ones I picked up for $5 each. They were Pier One brand, painted purple, originally lime green and very heavy, and well made.  I spray painted them black and sold them very quickly for $35. Nice profit since the buyer came to my house to pick them up
As I have told you many times, we absolutely love church rummage sales. Especially when they start uber early. So Carolyn and I hit the first one at 6:30 and I found these nice pots and pans and the coffee maker super cheap. The coffee maker has the nice feature of having a thermos carafe and a decaf/reg indicator switch. These go to my sister Fran. I think she'll appreciate them all.

All pots and pans and coffee maker: $15 total.
And yes, the coffee maker has been tested and  brews nicely!

Birthday gift for my grandson, Nate! This was I believe the last sale Johanna and I stopped and I kept myself from running up to the house when I saw the workshop. My son-in-law had requested I look for one and I had been searching for a couple of months. We had a laugh out loud moment when I put it in the back of Carolyn's car. There is a switch (I didn't know it) that turned the blade saw on when we loaded it and we couldn't find it to turn it off. No fingers were lost in locating the switch and the saw was safely stopped. Good laugh at the end of the morning!

$10 with tools

And here is the trunk shot of Johanna's  car after our Saturday morning. And yes, that is a lamp shade you see. It's so pretty...for only $1. #can'thelpmyself

Patty was the next friend who joined me a couple of Saturdays ago. Again, 5:45 was the time we met and headed to find our treasures. I found the items below and kept only the kid's beach chair. The rest of the items I sold.
Beach chair for Nate:  $3. Large shelf with peg hooks: $2.50. Both of the mugs were 50cents. The  one with the lid was a retired Vera Wang. They all sold rather quickly.
One morning Carolyn and I went to a weekday Estate Sale. It was not well run but wow, it had a lot of stuff! I held back and just picked up cheap low priced items.  I did walk by the Christmas table and felt drawn to these little figures. The one on the right is from Sweden, called a tomte. He's holding a reindeer and the antlers are supposed to be connected to his tail(don't ask me why) by a red string that's come undone. Just too cute to resist.

The ice cream scoop is discolored and I don't know how to revive. However, it is an awesome scoop! The handle is filled with a liquid that warms from your hand and it cuts like a knife with solidly frozen ice cream.

$1 vintage ice cream scoop
I was trying to cut down on individual photos so put this bag with the salt and pepper shakers. No, I didn't purchase this awesomely roomy beach bag at the estate sale but it was new with tags and I bought it when thrifting with Johanna.

The salt and pepper shakers were purchased at the estate sale for 25 cents each. They are vintage brushed aluminum Kromex shakers and rather collectable. These I will sell.

Bag: $1 Shakers:  25cents each

Also at the estate sale I picked up this vintage cracker canister. Take time to read the instructions on the inside lid! I didn't even know about that until I brought it home. Not sure if I will keep or sell. I really like it.

Why did this little bird call to me at the estate sale? Maybe because in the rush I thought it was a pie bird. Nope. It is a little vintage plastic bottle top. My search for a pie bird continues.

And now I am going to sign off. I have lots more finds to show but my, this post is getting long. So until my fingers recover from typing, I wish you all happy hunting.

Adieu Big Brother

I haven't blogged for a while but have definitely not been absent from the yard sale scene. April was was challenging for my extended family as we were consumed with helping my brother Sonny. Sonny was diagnosed with dementia several years ago and the disease had progressed rapidly this past year.

I had mentioned him in November of 2011 ThriftyChristy: Short and Sweet and last year in More and More.

Fishing with Sonny

I managed to visit him at least once a month for the past 5 years and though it was hard seeing the progression of the disease, spending time with him and his children and grandchildren has been something I will cherish.

Sonny passed away on April 16th at home with family members with him and I was honored to be a part of his care. I am relieved he is now at peace and am grateful I am part of a loving, reponsive family who embraces pain with love and kindness. RIP my big brother Sonny.
